9 Tons of Food Wasted Every Day When Ramadan, Really?


 Throughout the month of Ramadan, you will find a lot of ads for iftar, promotions at restaurants, fast food, and yet again, a giant billboard that offers a special buffet at the hotel.

As reported by the site Malaysiandigest.com, Thursday (09/06/2016), a common scenario in the month of Ramadan every year in Malaysia is to be royal to food. Surprisingly this happens at a time when many are still complaining about price increases, the burden of Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the high cost of living. In fact it can be seen, the luxury in terms of food goes hand in hand with the waste.
A study last year by the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Company (SWCorp) revealed that Malaysia dispose of 15 thousand tons of food daily, with the number of 3 thousand tons is still suitable for consumption, the amount of which is enough to feed 2 million people into hunger.
It is also surprising that every Ramadan, an average of 9 thousand tons of food is thrown away every day, equivalent to about 270 thousand tons of food per month, according to SWCorp.
No one can deny that Malaysia enjoyed a meal and proud of the wide range of quality food. But sometimes, this is redundant because a lot of people who tend hungry eyes and buy more than can be eaten during fasting. However, there is a non-governmental organization (NGO) which is always conscious of and concerned about the fact, and warned that leftovers should not go directly into the trash. The food can be distributed to institutions in need.
Ramadan is a holy month for Muslims, the time to collect the reward by doing good deeds and resist bad habits, training in self-control and moderation in all things, including overeating.
Muslims should strive to be thorough in terms of treating food and basically can not be wasting something that could be valuable to other people. They are also urged to share food with the poor, not only from the rest of the food, but also food that are made specifically to be shared.
In a blog, Ustaz Dr Mohd Shauqi Othman, Senior Lecturer at Universiti Putra Malaysia, emphasizing how Ramadan is a time for Muslims to be thrifty in their spending. Unfortunately, the exact opposite is happening because people are more willing to spend a variety of tasty food during fasting.
Some Muslims even treat them like breaking the fast 'food festival'. And the fasting month changed to 'eat in'. Shauqi Dr Ustaz Mohd Othman said.
Although the meal is necessary for human survival, to maintain health and healthy body and mind. However, overeating clearly pose a threat to health. For example, obesity and diabetes, stem from a lack of self-control in eating. That is why in Islam, considered prevention is better than cure.
Regardless of your beliefs, wasting food is not a good thing either in Ramadan or any other time. It is time we eat or buy food as needed. Let's remember, excess food could get into the storage container for the next day, if not, the food should be donated to charity.
